Aizhan Patten

When I started Fort Hunt Pilates in 2014, my goal was to establish a fitness and wellness studio in the suburbs of Washington DC. Since then, local clients keep coming because they love the classes and my personalized approach to teaching.

Utilizing reformers, TRX, and other top of the line fitness equipment, Fort Hunt Pilates is one of Alexandria’s best ways to be in shape. I hope to see you in class! See our testimonials and contact info below.

Instructors

Christy Monaco

Christy has been an instructor with Fort Hunt Pilates since 2020, training under studio owner Aizhan after having been a studio client since 2014. She is also certified as a TRX instructor. Christy teaches Pilates basics, advanced, and men’s classes and enjoys keeping things fresh for the clients with a variety of workouts. Nothing makes her prouder as an instructor than when she helps a student nail their first “short spine stretch” on the Reformer.

When not at the studio, Christy spends her days as an executive with a non-profit educational foundation in Northern Virginia. She “retired” from a 30-year federal career in 2020, and has mostly lived in the area since 1990. (Fun fact: Christy and Barbara, one of our other instructors, were both stationed in Naples, Italy in the late 90’s and were both devoted to step aerobics at the “Fit Zone” on base!).

Jennifer Lennon

Jennifer is a new instructor with Fort Hunt Pilates and has been a practicing Pilates for the last 15 years. She has been a studio client since 2016, training under studio owner, Aizhan. Jennifer now teaches private sessions and basics classes, and enjoys introducing new students to the classic Pilates movements and reformer she loves so much.  She believes it’s important to learn the basics to build a strong foundation for an ongoing Pilates practice.

In addition to Pilates, Jennifer is an executive with a marketing and advertising background working for government, financial and retail clients.  In her free time, Jennifer loves traveling, going to museums, and spending time with her dogs.

If you are new to Fort Hunt Pilates, and would like to learn the basics, she’s available for private sessions.

Paige Spangler

Paige has been working in the fitness industry for over 3 years. She has worked as a personal trainer, running coach, group fitness instructor, and a Pilates mat and reformer instructor  She believes Pilates compliments every lifestyle and enjoys adding modifications as well as progressions for varying skill levels. When she isn’t teaching at the studio she enjoys spending time with her husband and dogs, running, hiking, and traveling.

Barbara Douglass

Barbara has been teaching fitness and movement/dance classes for many years. Growing up with a mother who owned a dance studio facilitated that from a very young age. In her youth she competed in Scottish Highland Dancing which is a very athletic and high impact form of dance. She discovered that yoga and Pilates helped heal her body from the many injuries incurred from dancing, in fact she became stronger! With a degree in exercise physiology it was a natural progression to get certified to teach fitness. Starting with ACE (American Council on Exercise) Group Fitness and Personal Training and continuing on to Balanced Body and BASI Pilates Reformer and Mat certification. She looks forward to bringing her unique style of classic reformer exercises fused with music, weights and TRX to you!

How often should I do Pilates?

We recommend 2-3 times a week. That’s when you will see the best results and you will feel them fast. Most of our clients come 2-3 times a week and everyone mentions that their pain is gone, movement is easier and that they feel stronger, stand up straighter and feel better overall.
If you can only do once a week you will also experience all the benefits. The most important piece is consistency. Pilates is truly magic and you will feel good after your first session. Having said that, we don’t believe in shortcuts when it comes to our health. Consistency, even if just once a week, will win every time.

Will Pilates help with my lower back?

Absolutely! The vast majority of our clients turn to Pilates as a result of injury/pain, often lower back pain. We believe that if everyone did Pilates, 99 percent of lower back pain sufferers would be cured. Pilates with its focus on spinal and hip mobility, pelvic mobility and core strength is uniquely beneficial for low back pain. Please see our testimonials to see what others says how Pilates helped ease and eliminate their back pain.

Why Pilates is so expensive?

It’s a fair question and if we could live in the world where things could be free we would gladly offer free Pilates classes. Pilates reformer machines are amazing pieces of equipment that are made in the US and therefore are quite expensive. The training that Pilates instructors undergo is very lengthy and expensive as well. Unlike other exercise methods, where classes can be as big as 20-30 people, Pilates reformer, if done right, should be taught either one on one or in very small groups. Our qualified and experienced instructors really pay attention to everyone’s form and this would not be possible in a room with more than a handful of students. Think of Pilates as physical therapy on steroids and think about all the expertise and attention that goes into that kind of instruction. Hopefully this helps explain the cost.
